Mr. Spier's middle school students were testing their engineering skills to protect an egg dropped from the bucket truck. A lot of genius work from our 8th graders. Thank you to the City of Sanborn for providing the equipment and man power to make this happen!

The Middle School is collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House!!! Drop off your tabs with any middle school student, teacher, or at the middle school building. They will be collecting until Friday, April 14th. The Ronald McDonald House takes the pop tabs and recycles them and receives money, which they use to help offset expenses for families of children who are receiving medical care in the hospital. Families are able to utilize the Ronald McDonald House for lodging and use family rooms in the hospitals that provide more comfort than a normal waiting room.

8th grade science is working with air pressure changes. Mrs. Kroese placed a small amount of liquid in a pop can and heated it to boil point, where it turns to water vapor. The can was then flipped into a bowl of ice water. The warm water vapor is less dense than the ice cold water we submerged it into, causing the high pressure of the cold air to crush the can inwards.

Breakfast at HMS is served each morning, Monday through Friday, from 7:45 AM to 8:25 AM. School breakfasts play a big role in helping kids get the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and be healthy. The School Nutrition and Meal Cost Study* showed that school breakfast is a big supplier of foods most kids don’t eat enough of—whole grains, fruits, and dairy. The study also found that kids who eat school breakfast eat more of these foods than kids who eat breakfast elsewhere. Kids also learn how to have a healthy eating pattern at school breakfast. These healthy habits can help kids grow into healthy adults that have lower risks of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Learn more about school breakfast at: TeamNutrition.USDA.gov.

This year, HMS Elementary adopted a new ELA curriculum and we are loving how it ties in other content areas into our reading block! The 4th Graders in Mrs. Dokter's room are busy collaborating to come up with an invention to help rid the floor of garbage. The goal is to have the garbage end up in the garbage can.
