Last week Friday, HMS Elementary celebrated our annual Cancer Awareness Event. This year’s theme was Cutting into Cancer, and we honored Donna Thorn. Donna is the mother-in-law of Kristin Thorn, a preschool teacher at HMS. Donna was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer a few weeks ago, so we wanted to show her she is not in this fight alone.
Students and staff brought their money to help fill the fish tank. They collected $1,870 to be given to the Abben Cancer Center where Donna has her treatments! Everyone wore a cancer color shirt, and some kids colored their hair a cancer color. Posters and banners were made, and we ended the assembly with Madilynn Stueben, a 4th grade student, cutting her hair to send to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients, in honor of Donna.
The final part of our Cancer Awareness Event is the balloon release. Balloons that represented people who have cancer, people who had cancer, and people who lost their lives to cancer were released! Cancer is a terrible disease, and each year this day is about creating an awareness of all types of cancers and a day for HMS Elementary to help others. Our staff and students have the biggest hearts!

This morning, employees from Valero joined us for High Five Friday! Thank you for helping welcome our students to school and thank you for treating the ES staff to some delicious donuts!
